Houston dance instructor and mother of the late actor Patrick Swayze Patsy passed away recently after suffering from a stroke just days before the fourth anniversary of Patrick Swayze's death. Patsy was well known as one of Houston's go-to dance instructors. See was 86.

Every year we have the privilege of presenting a collection of the Best of Texas-made short films, and 2013 is no exception. There is something for everyone in the 90 minute Showcase comprised of projects selected by the jury panel that represent the creative, bold filmmaking that comes from Texas. The Showcase is designed for Los Angeles-based producers, agents, and studios to screen the work first hand of talented Texas cinematic storytellers. The Houston Film Commission's Texas Filmmaker's Showcase 2013 premiere is scheduled to screen in Los Angeles on Sunday June 30th at the Directors Guild of America theatre. Houston's creative community lost a legend with the passing of Dr. Sidner Berger. Dr. Sidney Berger is the former Director of the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance; founder and producing director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival and co-founder and producer of the Children's Theatre Festival, UH's professional summer projects. He has directed many productions for both the Houston Shakespeare Festival and the UH School of Theatre & Dance. Applications are now being accepted for Houston Filmmaker Grant 2013, a $30,000 matching grant for the production of a narrative feature-length commercial motion picture produced in Houston by a local filmmaker. First-time filmmakers (with production industry knowledge and experience) and film veterans are eligible for the program. The award will be presented to a recipient whose work shows excellence in the genres of narrative (live action or animation) production. Submissions must be received by March 15. A $20,000 grant is made possible through the City's Initiative Grant Program through Houston Arts Alliance. Two additional $5,000 grants - provided by the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau and Houston First Corporation - will provide the total of $30,000. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel comprised of five independent motion picture experts. Travis Ammons' feature film screens this Thursday at the River Oaks Theater. Ammons was behind the feature film "The Great American Moonrock Caper." The filmmaker has appeared on film as well as on stage. Check out the trailer above.
