The elections are over and the process of introducing and re-introducing the Texas Moving Image Incentive Program to our lawmakers continues. Sadly, the projected shortfall in our state's budget grows almost daily. Although we anticipate a very negative budget environment, we have laid the foundation for the value equation of continued funding for the incentive program. Your TXMPA leadership is already meeting with key legislators to make them fully aware of the successes of our program. To assist us in effectively conveying our message, we have contracted with strong partners - advocacy firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP and Lawrence Collins. Both contribute immense knowledge of the legislative and budget process. Our discussions began in late August and have already garnered a significant meeting with the Comptroller's office. This unfortunately not a Texas made film, but I did get a chance to see it at the Houston Film Commissions December "Film Slam". Mel House, writer/director of the recently released CLOSET SPACE, dropped Fango a line with word that his follow-up feature WALKING DISTANCE has been acquired for distribution, with a title change for its release next year. He also sent along some exclusive new photos from the movie. House tells us that Grindstone Entertainment picked up North American rights to WALKING DISTANCE, which will be issued in 2011 by Lionsgate Home Entertainment under the new moniker PSYCHIC EXPERIMENT. (The film had previously been rechristened EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITY for overseas sales thanks to the presence of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY heroine Katie Featherston in the cast.) As I write this post the 2010 Cimena Arts Festival is winding down. It definately had something for everyone this year. Some of the screenings I was able to attend were "Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer," a docudrama about the former New York Governors downfall after being tangled up with call-girl ring, directed by Alex Gibney; Frederic Laffont's documentary "Ballad For a Cowboy," which follows bareback rodeo rider Clint Cannon and his dreams of reaching the finals at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Also got a chance to screen the 2010 honorees of the Texas Filmmakers Showcase. This annual event celebrates Texas Short Filmmakers. This is the trailer for Katrina's Son, one of 2010 Texas Filmmakers Showcase honorees which was screened during the Cinema Arts Festival. The short film is about a tragic tale of a young boy who loses his grandmother in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and then goes on a search for his birth mother who relocated to San Antonio. It is official that Texas Film Commissioner, Bob Hudgins, has resigned his office and will be leaving the end of November. I am genuinely saddened to lose someone I value so highly from such an important position in the efforts to bring moving image production to Texas. But at the same time I am happy for a friend and colleague that is taking steps to return to his passion of making films and spending more nights at home. I believe Bob redefined the role of the Texas Film Commissioner. He has traveled the State tirelessly as an advocate for our industry and poured his heart into helping create and manage an incentive program that has proven to be highly successful at bringing production to Texas. The program has generated over $600,000,000 in new in-state spending and has created over 60,000 jobs since its inception in 2007. I had a chance to check out this animated feature film last night at 14 Pews, the orginal home of the Aurora Picture Show done by UT grad students. It took eight years to make this stop animation and it depicts the bizarre and extremely violent adventures of Pvt. Joe Holmes, a marine stationed in Vietnam's "I Corp" from 1968 to 1969. The film was directed by Paul Hanley and Kieran Healy.

Jim Parsons who plays the character Dr. Sheldon Cooper on the CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" won an Emmy Award earlier tonight. Parsons was a member of Houston's Infernal Bridegroom productions theater troop before making the move to hollywood. Congrats to Mr. Parsons on his win.

"For Whom He Tolls" is the story of a young girl named Kayla, played by Lena Clark (Battle: Los Angeles, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell) who comes back home to take care of her mentally ailing Memah, played by Houston's own Gina Brazell (the film was photographed by Gina's beau Larry McKee). Harris County revealed it's proposal for the future of the former 8th Wonder of the World. It's now up to Houstonians on what will happen. The county would like to have a final decision by years end. B.C.F.N. will contiue to follow this story until a final decision is made.

KLRU has asked AFS to send a small group of volunteers to help take pledges during the broadcast of CITIZEN ARCHITECT and I'd like for you to join me. Incentives Program Safeguards in Place The Texas Motion Picture Alliance (TXMPA) is dedicated to the preservation and enrichment of the moving image industry in the State of Texas. Since our inception, TXMPA's primary goal has, and will continue to be, to generate jobs for Texans and create income for Texas. As such, we have been extremely vocal advocates for the Texas Moving Image Incentive Program as administered by the Office of the Governor. Since being signed into law on April 23, 2009, the current Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program has resulted in over half a billion dollars in Texas production spending and the creation of over 53,000 cast and crew jobs for Texans.
