2013 TEXAS FILMMAKER SHOWCASE HONOREES

Every year we have the privilege of presenting a collection of the Best of Texas-made short films, and 2013 is no exception. There is something for everyone in the 90 minute Showcase comprised of projects selected by the jury panel that represent the creative, bold filmmaking that comes from Texas. The Showcase is designed for Los Angeles-based producers, agents, and studios to screen the work first hand of talented Texas cinematic storytellers. The Houston Film Commission's Texas Filmmaker's Showcase 2013 premiere is scheduled to screen in Los Angeles on Sunday June 30th at the Directors Guild of America theatre. Thank you to all the Texas filmmakers who entered and keep making films in Texas! Here are this years honorees:



Cork's Cattlebarron by Eric Steele (15:15 min.)

Two men sit down for a life-changing steak dinner in Omaha, Nebraska.  

The Garden and the Wilderness by Craig Whitney (27:19 min.)

After 30 years spent caring for a Texas hunting estate, ranch hand Will James must confront the prospect of moving on from his life's work when he learns that the property will be sold following the owner's death. A final visit from the late owner's son gives Will a chance to reflect on his past and the uncertain future that awaits.

 

Hellion by Kat Candler (6:25 min.)

All hell breaks loose when Petey is left with his hell raising brothers. But things go from bad to really, really bad when dad comes home.

 

Little Lions by Tony Costello (9:56 min.)

Cosmo spends his days roughhousing with this little brother and sister, and the games don't stop when he discovers an injured bird in their backyard. 'Little Lions' is the story of Cosmo, a boy who's just starting to figure it out.

 

Vincent Valdez: Excerpts for John by Angela & Mark Walley (11:53 min.)

Two years in the making, this short documentary film captures the creative process of artist Vincent Valdez. Filmmakers Mark and Angela Walley followed Valdez as he created a series of works dedicated to his childhood best friend John Holt Jr., an Army combat medic who died in 2009 after serving in Iraq.

 

Vultures of Tibet by Russell Oliver Bush (21:01 min.)

In rapidly developing Western China, Sky Burial - a sacred ritual where the bodies of Tibetan dead are fed to wild griffon vultures - becomes a popular tourist attraction.
