AWARD WINNING TEXAS FILMMAKER YA'KE SMITH COMES TO HOUSTON
Co-Sponsored by Houston Film Commission and Writer and Director Cash Anthony
WIFT-Houston brings Texas Filmmaker Ya'ke Smith to Houston for a one-day seminar Directing Actors For Film.
Great visuals - Compelling story - Interesting Visual effects: Although each of these are important in the creation of a great film, the one thing that stands above them all... is the actor in the frame. This workshop will examine the director/actor relationship and explore the ways in which film directors can get compelling performances out of their actors. By analyzing various directing techniques, including script analysis, rehearsal strategies, beat-by-beat breakdowns, staging and effective acting exercises, each director will walk away with a deeper knowledge of what it means to connect with an actor and unlock their creative intuition.
Film directors looking to hone their skills in the art of eliciting complex, heartfelt performances from actors will find this class useful.
Widely regarded as one of this generation's next film directors to watch, Ya'Ke has made a name for himself as a filmmaker with a veracious style of storytelling that takes an unflinching look at issues facing today's society.
Ya'Ke made his first film at the age of 15, while a student at Sam Houston High School in his native San Antonio, Texas, and has yet to look back. His films have received world-wide acclaim, screening and winning awards at over 80 film festivals, including The Cannes International Film Festival, The DC Shorts Film Festival, The Austin Film Festival, The Dallas International Film Festival, The BET/Urbanworld Film Festival and The American Black Film Festival. His films have also screened on HBO, Showtime and BET. He is the recipient of a Director's Guild of America Student Film Award, a regional Student Academy Award and an HBO Short Film Award. His short, Katrina's Son, won 14 film festivals and was eligible for this year's Academy Award in short filmmaking. Ya'Ke's debut feature-film WOLF was honored with the Panavision Best Texas Film Award at the Dallas International Film Festival and the Arkansas Times Audience Choice Award at the Little Rock Film Festival.
