Recent Art Institute Graduate Glenn Challenger submitted the spot which if picked could air during next years Superbowl. Glenn's spot is called "Cut" and his team is Good Banana. The winners of the contest also take home a million dollar prize and get the chance to work with The Lonely Island Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. CINEMA ARTS FESTIVAL WRAP UP

The city of Houston celebrated cinema earlier this month. The 3rd annual Cinema Arts festival unspooled November 9th thru 13th, 2011 with 35+ events all over town. As usual with festivals you can't see everything since there are multiple screening at the same time and I still haven't figured out how to clone myself. So, the following is a wrap up of what I did get a chance to see.

First up was the annual Texas Filmmakers Showcase. The Houston Film Commission seeks out the best short films made in Texas and the winners are first screened in Los Angeles. Notables from this years competition were Soham Mehta's, (in photo) "Fatakra," Bradley Jackson's "The Man Who Never Cried," which you can see below in a previous post and "LCD Soundsystem - Home" filmed by Houstonians Mark Armes and Rick Darge.

Next up was "Echotone." Directed by Nathan Christ, the film takes it's viewer through what happens when Austin's music community has to adapt to the city growing population with high rise condos going up next to or near some of that cities most well known live music venue. After the sceening we were treated to a live performance by one of the music artist featured in the film Dana Falconbury.

Next I got the chance to see "Trimpin: The Sound of Invention." The documentary feature follows the artist/inventor/engineer/composer while he collaborates with the Kronos Quartet. (Photo of Trimpin on the left) After that was the period piece "The Artist." This French made black and white feature takes place in the 1920's and follows the silent film actor George Valentin and how he deals with the end of his silent film career as talkies become the new norm in Hollywood.

On Sunday I had the chance to catch the feature film "Tape." Texan Richard Linklater directed the film which stars Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard and Uma Thurman as three former high school friends who come to grips with their relationship when Leonard's character comes back to town to screen his latest film at the local film festival. Director Linklater and Ethan Hawke talked about their working together after the screening. Lastly I got to see the feature film "Natural Selection." Houston area native Robbie Pickering wrote and directed the film with follows the ultra religious and sexually frustrated Linda from suburban Texas wife who takes a road trip to find her husband's son after he suffers a stroke.

All of the films I got to see were enjoyable. Can't wait until next year.

ETHAN HAWKE COMES TO CINEMA ARTS FILM FESTIVAL

HOUSTON – Austin native, Ethan Hawke, whose career has spanned theater and film acting and directing as well as novel writing, will present his latest film, The Woman in the Fifth, for the first time in Houston at the 2011 Cinema Arts Festival Houston. Hawke will receive the Levantine Cinema Arts Award from the festival, honoring his multifaceted career in the arts, which started at age 14.The screening at the Museum of Fine Arts Brown Auditorium on Saturday, November 12 at 7 PM will be followed by a conversation on his multifaceted career, moderated by film teacher and critic Joe Leydon. If that is not enough, Hawke’s good friend, famed director of Slacker and Dazed and Confused, Richard Linklater will join Hawke the following day for a tenth anniversary screening of their 2001 collaboration, Tape, on November 13 at 1 PM at Edwards Greenway Grand Palace. Also premiering in Texas at the 2011 Cinema Arts Festival Houston are three major upcoming releases: the award-winning and critically acclaimed The Artist, Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus, and David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method.

Artistic Director Richard Herskowitz comments: “We’re thrilled to be bringing Ethan Hawke here with his close friend and collaborator, Rick Linklater. Linklater’sTape was a breakthrough performance for Hawke, and his phenomenal growth as an actor is on ample display in his new psychological thriller, The Woman in the Fifth. Rick Linklater launched our festival in 2009 with the opening night screening of Me and Orson Welles, and has been a supportive member of our honorary board ever since.”

Hawke is best known for his breakthrough supporting role in Dead Poets Society, in which he appeared alongside Robin Williams in 1989. Shortly thereafter, a movie that took place in Houston gained him critical acclaim – 1994’s Generation X drama, Reality Bites. A year later, he starred in Linklater’s romantic drama Before Sunrise, and later in the 2004 sequel Before Sunset. In 2001, Hawke was cast as a rookie police officer in Training Day, for which he received a Screen Actors Guild and Academy Award nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category. Other films have included the science fiction feature Gattaca (1997), the title role in Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet (2000), the action thriller Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), and the crime drama Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007).

In addition, Hawke has appeared in many theater productions including The Seagull, Henry IV, Hurlyburly, The Cherry Orchard, The Winter’s Tale and The Coast of Utopia, for which he earned a Tony Award nomination. He made his directorial debut with the 2002 independent feature Chelsea Walls. In November 2007 Hawke directed his first play, Jonathan Marc Sherman’s Things We Want. Aside from acting, he has written two novels, The Hottest State (1996) and Ash Wednesday (2002).

Hawke’s film, The Woman in the Fifth – a thriller based on Douglas Kennedy’s novel – is directed by Pawel Pawlikowski and co-stars Kristin Scott Thomas. Hawke plays American writer Tom Ricks, who comes to Paris desperate to put his life together again and win back the love of his estranged wife and daughter. When things don’t go according to plan, he ends up in a shady hotel in the suburbs, having to work as a night guard to make ends meet. Then Margit (played by Thomas), a beautiful, mysterious stranger walks into his life and things start looking up. Their passionate and intense relationship triggers a string of inexplicable events… as if an obscure power was taking control of his life. Following the screening of The Woman in the Fifth, Joe Leydon will host a Q&A with Hawke, diving into the breadth of the actor/director/novelist’s career.

Finally, as part of the festivities surrounding Hawke’s appearance at the 2011 Cinema Arts Festival Houston, Hawke will receive the 2nd Annual Levantine Cinema Arts Award, which honors a leading actor, director, or other creative artist who has stretched the boundaries of cinematic expression throughout an illustrious film career. The award is sponsored by Levantine Entertainment, a new motion picture development, financing and production company aiming to provide U.S. and worldwide audiences with high quality, socially conscious, and character-driven films.

The third annual Cinema Arts Festival Houston will be held Nov. 9-13, 2011.

FALLEN STAR - MARICELA OCHOA-HENDERSON

It is with great sadness that I have to report on the passing of Austin actress Maricela Ochoa Henderson. Ochoa lost her battle with breast cancer earlier today. Starting with a ABC After School Special in 1993 she has a pretty steady career in Los Angeles working on show like "Joan of Arcadia," "Missing Persons," "New York Undercover" and "ER." She also had worked in theater as well as several film before having to suspend her career in 2007. Ochoa leaves behind her husband, family and hundreds of friends.

CITY OF HOUSTON FILM COMMISSION SCREENING ROOM

I had a chance to stop by Houston city hall recently. I have to admit I hadn't been down there in quite a few years. It was my first ever visit to the city of Houston's visitors center. I went for a test screening for a local filmmakers work and had no idea the in the visitors center is a small 48 seat screening room. While I can't talk about the film here, the screening room itself was a nice surprise. More Houston filmmakers should utilize this space to screen their projects in order to get feedback during the post production faze. Click on the Houston Film Commission link below for more info.

WORLDFEST HOUSTON WRAP UP

WorldFest-Houston, the third longest-running International Film Festival in North America, and oldest Indie Film Festival in the World, celebrated the conclusion of its 10-day run of films, fun and fanfare in its 44th annual independent film showcase with an increase in overall audience attendance of 15 percent over 2010 attendance, despite the economic turndown.

Kicking off WorldFest's Opening Night festivities on Friday, April 8, was the Texas premiere of Chad Waterhouse and Ankush Kholi's poignant road film EXODUS FALL (Jesse James, Rosanna Arquette) with producer, Michael Baumgarten and both directors on hand to present their film. WorldFest also this year celebrated its Sixth annual Panorama Italia in collaboration with Albert di Mauro, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles, CA. Closing weekend festivities April 16 & April 17 included a Grand Awards Gala on Saturday night that culminated with a Sunday morning VIP NASA & Space Center Houston whirlwind tour and WorldFest Consular Regatta and Barbeque hosted by Port of Houston Authority and The Houston Yacht Club. The "Longhorn Cowgirls" from Hempstead, Texas accompanied by two huge Longhorn steers and welcomed the hundreds of visiting international filmmakers at The Houston Yacht Club.

To wrap up, WorldFest offered a tiered closing bill of Panorama Entertainment's ANOTHER HARVEST MOON directed by Greg Swartz, an encore screening of Shawn Welling's PROJECT AETHER a three time winner at the Awards Gala & an encore screening of Egemen Erturk's THE RINGING BALL just in from Istanbul.

WorldFest, founded as Cinema Arts, an International Film Society in August 1961, became the third competitive international film festival in North America, following San Francisco and New York. WorldFest evolved into a competitive International Film Festival in April 1968 and has a long list of "discovered" film greats such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, David Lynch, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, Atom Egoyan, Randall Kleiser, Ang Lee, Robert Rodriguez, the Coen Brothers, John Lee Hancock and many others from their beginning efforts for film submissions early in their careers. Multi award-winning producer/director, Hunter Todd, founded this film festival to honor all categories of film and video production continuing his long dedication of "Discovery," spotlighting emerging Independent filmmakers as "the Spielbergs & Ang Lees of tomorrow."

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hour...s.

On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will screen at a local theater.

My first time going to SXSW was definately a good time. With so much to choose from it was hard to pick which films to see. Of course I had to check out the opening film. So I made my way to Austin's historic Paramount Theater and saw "Source Code" starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Opening to the general public on April 1st. I won't reveal to much about the film, so check out the trailer, and then go see the film.

"Blacktino" is a dark teen comedy about an overweight half-black, half-hispanic nerd named Stefan Daily. He was raised by his black grandmother in a medium sized suburb of Austin, TX. Struggling to find his place in a mostly white high school, Stefan finds sanctuary among the eclectic mix of social outcasts in the school's Theatre Department.

Wuss is the story of a high school teacher who faces constant ridicule after he's repeatedly beaten up by several of his own students. Having nowhere else to turn, he eventually teams up with another of his students to fight back. This student, a young girl, is feared school-wide because of a dark family reputation. She also has an unfortunate nickname grafted to her due to her predilection for smoking discarded cigarettes. Bonded in battle, the student and teacher form a friendship that stretches the use of the word inappropriate.

The film "Apart" follows Noah Greene and Emily Gates, two people linked by a rare pyschological disorder must uncover the mystery in order to find hope for the future.

I wish I had the the time to see more of the films that were screened. Sunday, my last day in Austin was for panels. I was able to get to the three of them, including film financing, working with friends in the movie business and "Hollywood Lessons, What Film School Didn't Teach Me." Next year SXSW Film Festival will turn 20 years old, the music festival reached 25 this year. Hopefully I'll be able to stay longer and cover more.

This session’s budget crisis has encouraged us to develop a more personalized approach to the legislative outreach in support of our Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program. Because of the tough economic choices Legislators are facing, it is vitally important to be sensitive in our outreach to any perception that funding for the Incentive Program would detract from other worthy programs.

One of our greatest strengths is that we are an industry made up of unique individuals with our own personal stories of how the Incentive Program has created opportunities for us here in Texas. Given the budget environment, we have decided that this year we can most effectively share our message through ongoing, personalized initiatives rather than the large-scale public rally on the Capitol steps.

For this reason, we have rescheduled the rally to be part of our information session on Tuesday night at Austin Studios, and are encouraging members to use Wednesday as an opportunity to make personal visits to your hometown Representatives and Senators to demonstrate the ongoing economic investment and jobs the Incentives provide their local constituents, as well as the State as a whole.

We will have a command post set up in the Capitol to assist members in your outreach, which we will discuss in more detail at Tuesday night’s session. We hope you’ll join us next week and share your stories to help support the Program.

The Texas Filmmakers Showcase is a special screening event consisting of the best of Texas short films and videos under 40 minutes in length, presented to studio executives, agents and producers in the Hollywood film community.
The filmmakers whose projects are selected to participate will be flown from Texas to Los Angeles and provided with one evenings accommodation and transportation to and from the screening.

The screening is accompanied by a reception where filmmakers and industry professionals can visit with each other to discuss filmmaking , financing, distribution and other aspects of the movie business.

The submitted projects must have been produced in Texas or by a current Texas resident; The project must be under 40 minutes in length; the project must have been completed within three years before the entry deadline of April 1; the project cannot have been submitted in a previous year; three projects per filmmaker, per year can be submitted; No Entry Fee!

The first screening of the 2011 Texas Filmmakers Showcase will be held in Los Angeles in summer 2011. Additional public screenings of the Showcase will be held around Texas throughout the rest of the year.

We'll announce more details soon, as your TXMPA Board members are hard at work with our advocacy firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP and Lawrence Collins to navigate this especially challenging, high-stakes legislative session under the cloud of a $27 billion state budget deficit.

As you may have heard, HB1 (the House version of the state budget bill) was filed this week, and includes a drastic proposed reduction to our industries' crucial and successful incentives program. Our incentives may be cut from $60 million to just $10 million for the coming biennium (2012-2013), which would be a devastating blow to film, tv, commercial and video game production and professionals in Texas.
Yet in the face of that, we have a great story to tell - our incentive program has generated over $610 million dollars in new in-state spending and has accounted for over 56,000 jobs for Texans. We strongly believe that cutting our program won't save Texas money, it'll cost us - both in terms of business and jobs. In fact, the Comptroller's Office recently released a study that found for every $117 in incentives granted, $1,000 in Texas production spending has been generated, reporting "Texas has proven to be successful." Our incentives are working, and putting Texans to work in Texas.

This was one of the short films screened at Houston Film Commissions First Thursday's. Once a month on the first Thursday of every month the Houston Film Commission screens short films made by Texas filmmakers. "Delmer Builds a Machine" was one of two films screened this month along with "Hijo de mi Madre" by Luis Mireles. Jorge Diaz, the star of the film was in the audience. Alfred Cervantes talked with both filmmakers via Skype and also let members of the audience ask questions of the filmmakers. The crowd was a little smaller due to the weather, but they seemed to enjoy the films screened.

Greg Carter returns to the MFAH with A Gangland Love Story (2010, 99 min), inspired by Romeo and Juliet and shot in Houston´s Fifth Ward [FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY]. He is a graduate of Texas A&M and has an M.F.A. in Filmmaking from Rice. Carter has produced 17 feature films and documentaries, serving as director and writer on many of them. He is a member of the Texas Filmmakers´ Hall of Fame and has received numerous awards. Greg enjoys teaching filmmaking to young people under the auspices of the Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP) and is currently in post-production on his latest film.

Following the screening, former Houston Chronicle film critic Eric Harrison (www.MovieHouston.com ) conducts a conversation with Carter about his career. Harrison has covered the film industry since 1998. Since 2008, Eric´s writing about movies appeared online. He is a member of the Houston Film Critics Society.

TXMPA UPDATE: LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The elections are over and the process of introducing and re-introducing the Texas Moving Image Incentive Program to our lawmakers continues. Sadly, the projected shortfall in our state's budget grows almost daily. Although we anticipate a very negative budget environment, we have laid the foundation for the value equation of continued funding for the incentive program. Your TXMPA leadership is already meeting with key legislators to make them fully aware of the successes of our program.

To assist us in effectively conveying our message, we have contracted with strong partners - advocacy firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP and Lawrence Collins. Both contribute immense knowledge of the legislative and budget process. Our discussions began in late August and have already garnered a significant meeting with the Comptroller's office.

We are not blind to the fact that this next legislative session will be highly challenging. It will be very difficult to keep our funding amid all of the budget cuts. Plans for Lobby Day 2011 are already underway and it is important that we build upon the success and goodwill generated by previous Lobby Days.

To date, our state incentive program has generated over $610 million dollars in new in-state spending and has accounted for over 55,000 jobs for Texans. An independent economic impact study will show how this equates in actual dollars returned to the state. We feel confident that our program and this report will prove the viability of our efforts. Still, we need to make improvements to the program in order to grow and spread the work across the entire state.

All of this activity and effort requires large financial resources - financial support from individuals and companies. We have been fortunate to share in the proceeds from multiple premieres of films from Troublemaker Studios conducted by our long time supporter, the Austin Film Society. I want to publicly thank AFS as well as Elizabeth Avellan and Robert Rodriguez. Other generous donors include IATSE and the Dallas Producers Association and we thank them for their continued support.

Although we are enjoying and all time high in TXMPA membership, it represents only a very small fraction of industry professionals across the state.

Financial resources are crucial to our efforts and we don't yet have the resources to see us through the legislative session. Now more than ever, we need the industry to rally behind our efforts in order for us to be successful.

We need YOU to make this happen. Make sure you are a paid member of TXMPA. Ask your friends and colleagues if they are members. Make sure everyone you know in the industry is a paid member of TXMPA. Not sure if you are paid up? Email membership@txmpa.org

Mel House, writer/director of the recently released CLOSET SPACE, dropped Fango a line with word that his follow-up feature WALKING DISTANCE has been acquired for distribution, with a title change for its release next year. He also sent along some exclusive new photos from the movie.

House tells us that Grindstone Entertainment picked up North American rights to WALKING DISTANCE, which will be issued in 2011 by Lionsgate Home Entertainment under the new moniker PSYCHIC EXPERIMENT. (The film had previously been rechristened EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITY for overseas sales thanks to the presence of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY heroine Katie Featherston in the cast.) Also starring Denton Blane Everett, Glenn Morshower, Kathy Lamkin, Debbie Rochon, Melanie Donihoo, Reggie Bannister, Adrienne King, James LaMarr and Shannon Lark, EXPERIMENT is about strange and horrifying goings-on in a self-sufficient gated community that stem from a mysterious research facility.“I am excited beyond belief,” House says. “Obviously, with Grindstone behind us, we’re looking at a great release—the kind I think the film deserves. It has definitely been a labor of love, so it’s great to see it get this kind of fairy-tale ending…dark, melty, disturbing fairy tale that it may be.”

While details of the disc release have yet to be announced, House assures, “We’ve been working nonstop to put together a bunch of cool extras. We’ve recorded a commentary track with Reggie, Debbie, Shannon, Denton, Melanie and myself—and it was awesome. Great energy, and everyone was excited. To top it off, Reggie had just seen the film for the first time the night before, so it was neat to get his thoughts in that context. He was pretty impressed, I think…which really made me feel great. When the woman who killed Mrs. Voorhees and the guy who fought the Tall Man tell you they’re proud of you…it’s pretty damn cool. I was half-afraid he’d shoot me with that four-barrel shotgun.”

CINEMA ARTS FESTIVAL WRAP UP

As I write this post the 2010 Cimena Arts Festival is winding down. It definately had something for everyone this year. Some of the screenings I was able to attend were "Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer," a docudrama about the former New York Governors downfall after being tangled up with call-girl ring, directed by Alex Gibney; Frederic Laffont's documentary "Ballad For a Cowboy," which follows bareback rodeo rider Clint Cannon and his dreams of reaching the finals at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Also got a chance to screen the 2010 honorees of the Texas Filmmakers Showcase. This annual event celebrates Texas Short Filmmakers. Most notable in this years line up was "Katrina's Son" by Ya'Ke Smith and Van Blumriech's "The Natural Order of Things"

I also got the chance to meet actor filmmaker John Turturro after the screening of his feature "Rehearsal For a Sicilian Tragedy" with director Roman Paska. Isabella Rossellini was also in the audience. Rossellini was in town to screen two films during the festival. I didn't realize I was sitting directly across the aisle from her until she was whisked away to one of her screenings at the Rice Media Center. Stunningly beautiful, even now.

All in all it looked to be a great festival, and hopefully if my crazy schedule allows I'll be able to report again from CAFH next year.

TEXAS FILM COMMISSIONER RESIGNS

It is official that Texas Film Commissioner, Bob Hudgins, has resigned his office and will be leaving the end of November. I am genuinely saddened to lose someone I value so highly from such an important position in the efforts to bring moving image production to Texas. But at the same time I am happy for a friend and colleague that is taking steps to return to his passion of making films and spending more nights at home.

I believe Bob redefined the role of the Texas Film Commissioner. He has traveled the State tirelessly as an advocate for our industry and poured his heart into helping create and manage an incentive program that has proven to be highly successful at bringing production to Texas. The program has generated over $600,000,000 in new in-state spending and has created over 60,000 jobs since its inception in 2007.

Bob and I have had the occasion to visit and discuss his plans and desires for the future many times since early this year. Those of you who know Bob know that the requirements of the job definition he created for himself have taken him away from the things he really loves, his wife, daughter, and chickens way too often. Bob intends to stay in the home he has created here in Texas and will continue to be an advocate for all aspects of the moving image industry. I had a chance to check out this animated feature film last night at 14 Pews, the orginal home of the Aurora Picture Show done by UT grad students. It took eight years to make this stop animation and it depicts the bizarre and extremely violent adventures of Pvt. Joe Holmes, a marine stationed in Vietnam's "I Corp" from 1968 to 1969. The film was directed by Paul Hanley and Kieran Healy.
